One Planet Culture: Changing the world from your armchair

If you’re an armchair activist with a passion for film, arts and media, One Planet Cinema is for you. From DIY film events to green reads and the latest news and reviews, we offer creative inspiration and information to help you help the planet.

As part of Every Action Counts (EAC), our latest focus is on caring for your local area.

“If everyone swept their own doorstep, the world would soon be clean.” As the proverb suggests, getting neighbours together for a spring clean can make the local area a more attractive, safer and friendlier place for everyone.

Caring for your area

Spring is the perfect time to get down and dirty in the great outdoors, so this week we are asking you to take a look at Richard Reynolds’ book, ‘On Guerrilla Gardening’. A handbook for gardening without boundaries, the book charts Richard’s movement to fight filth with forks and flowers, using the gentle art of gardening to rejuvenate derelict local land for everyone’s benefit. Check out Richard's blog at http://www.guerrillagardening.org/

Gardening is the new black

Reynolds’ blog features guerrilla gardening activities around the world. Closer to home, London’s Capital Growth campaign hopes to create 2,012 new food growing spaces by 2012. Offering financial and practical support to would-be veggie gardeners, new growing spaces are already sprouting in a Brixton estate, a private garden and Latchmere Prison. Go to the website to register your skills, offer your land or find out how to track down the owners of a plot you’re interested in.

Designs on the outside

To help nature on its way, the latest crop of designers are creating wonderful ways to enhance our outdoor space and encourage wildlife at the same time. Check out the beautiful ceramic Bird Balls, Sixixis’ incredible rolling summerhouse made out of steam-bent timber, and Susan Bradley’s outdoor carpets and wallpaper.

Be good to bees

Help save Britain's bees! These precious creatures are at risk of dying out because of viruses, wet weather, parasites and lack of food. Bees are vital in helping produce food and flowers. Without them, our environment could change drastically.

BBC Breathing Places and Blue Peter are giving away 75,000 free Be Good to Bees packs of wildflower seeds. Plant them in a suitable container on a windowsill or in your garden, and they'll soon grow into very special place where bees can hang out. So why wait...

Community energy

Gardening isn’t the only way you can care for your local area. Local neighbourhoods all over the UK are teaming up to reduce their collective energy use or even produce their own energy. Community Action for Energy (CafE) offers advice, training, technical support and information to get your project off the ground. You can also tap into hundreds of on-going community projects at http://www.energysavingtrust.org.uk/cafe

Stuck for money? British Gas is running Green Streets 2009, a competition to win funding and expertise for your local community group. Check the website for more details. https://www.britishgas.co.uk/GreenStreet/Home/

And for those still attached to obscure seven inch vinyl, here’s a top climate change tune from The Killer Funk Renewable Resources Allstar Big Band.

In the claustrophobic atmosphere of an underground car park in Shepherd’s Bush, Adam Brace’s new play Stovepipe takes an unflinching look at the businesses involved in rebuilding Iraq.

Already seen Stovepipe or bought the Killer Funk ? What did you make of it? Share your thoughts at http://oneplanetculture.ning.com/

At OPC, we believe that films, books, art and design can shock and inspire people to go greener. If that’s ever happened to you, we’d love to know about it! What was your cultural catalyst, why was it so powerful and what’s happened since? Let us know at
