One Planet Culture: Changing the world from your armchair
If you’re an armchair activist with a passion for film, arts and media, OPC is for you. From DIY film events to green reads and the latest news and reviews, we offer creative inspiration and information to help you help the planet.
As part of Every Action Counts (EAC), our latest focus is on ethical shopping. As the recession bites and the sun comes out, retail therapy ain’t what it was. Shop local, shop national, shop fair, shop less – so many ways to make sure your money works hard for people and the planet.
Charity chic
For this month only, Mary Portas, retail rejuvenator and the guru behind Harvey Nicks, is moving into charity shops with her own ‘Living and Giving’ Save the Children shop in London’s Westfield shopping complex. Selling only the most fabulous of fashion, household and garden items, it will be staffed by celebrity volunteers and Grazia magazine staff. Fancy joining the great and the good behind the till? Just complete this form, selecting ‘Mary Portas Westfield’ from the store menu.
Made in Britain
For a humorous take on buying British, check out Dom Joly’s new series starting on 8 June on Blighty (Virgin TV 206/Sky534). With his life stripped of everything made overseas – from his German fridge to his Sri Lankan M&S pants – he travels the UK to find out what’s left of our manufacturing industry. No enormous mobile phones in sight, but some interesting insights into what we still make well. And yes, he was allowed to keep his Canadian wife!
Swap a Shop campaign
If you’re a foodie in the south west, why not get behind this campaign to swap one trip to the supermarket for one to an independent retailer every month? Local shops in the Cornish town Camelford have seen a big improvement, and their customers get good value for money and help safeguard precious local jobs. The campaign is led by regional food champion, Food magazine.
Swap don’t shop
Or you could simply swap instead of shop. Hot on the heels of Freecycle comes Swapcycle, a marketplace for swapping what you don’t want for what you do. And it’s not just stuff you can swap. Holistic Holidays want to swap a yoga holiday on Lanzarote for some professional PR support.

Blood, sweat and takeaways: A powerful look at the human cost of meeting our appetite for all sorts of food all year round. Six young takeaway fans go behind the scenes in South East Asia’s food production industries, living and working with the people who struggle in deadly conditions for our prawns, tuna, rice and chicken.
And more from Mary Portas, who takes over as manager of a flagging Save The Children branch in Orpington, Kent, in a three part series from 2 June. Find both at www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer

The unlikeliest faces are going green at the moment. Check out Tom ‘Forrest Gump’ Hanks’ MySpace page, dedicated to electric cars.
Forget Twitter, twitching is the new rock ‘n’ roll. Elbow front man Guy Garvey has gone public about how much time he spends peering at lovely birds through binoculars (pun intended). But the kit has to be right, apparently. “There's this pair of second-hand, self-steadying binoculars I want - when you drink as much as I do the anti-shake is very important.” Garvey, British Sea Power guitarist Martin Noble and the 6 Music DJ Marc Riley are set to make a birding radio documentary this summer, provisionally titled In Search of the Holy Quail…What’s a quail? Find out here http://www.rspb.org.uk/wildlife/birdidentifier/
And if bird-watching’s not enough to counteract that hectic superstar lifestyle, try angling. Caught by the river is a new collection of ‘rock ‘n’ rock’ nature writing exploring the UK’s waterways through the eyes of Jarvis Cocker, Edwyn Collins, Irvine Welsh and Alice Oswald. Check out the blog that spawned it. http://caughtbytheriver.net/
At OPC, we believe that films, books, art and design can shock and inspire people to go greener. If that’s ever happened to you, we’d love to know about it! What was your cultural catalyst, why was it so powerful and what’s happened since?
