Skin - the green makeover

The essential guide to green hair and beauty uncovered

The hair and beauty sector is made up of unsung neighbourhood businesses to global brand leaders with the potential to be the front runner on greener and profitable business, developing a new generation of environmentally aware and skilled people from diverse walks of life. Click here to down-load the essential guide to green hair and beauty uncovered

Green makeover

Prepare for the hair and beauty sector to be the new green industry with an expert green ‘makeover’ courtesy of The Academy for greener jobs and skills.

In the UK there are 31,000 hair and beauty businesses. It’s worth £500 million with an estimated 340 million visits a year. It has an estimated 205,000 jobs that’s double the number of jobs predicted for the energy efficiency manufacturing sector

The hair and beauty industry may not hit you as an obvious starting point for greening the economy. But hair dryers and nail varnish are just as important as solar panels in a fair low carbon economy that offers greener jobs for everyone.

Stripping products of hazardous substances, smarter use of water and electricity, greening training and jobs can make the hair and beauty a leading green industry and green job provider.

Change Makers

Skin is working with the hair and beauty industry to create change makers.  Our change makers want to make a difference, they are salon owners, colleges, product makers and trainees and trainers.

The Skin Award

The Awards support green hair and beauty pioneers to explore and learn about green skills, business and job creation. The award provides £250 fund to three winners in three categories:

Salon Skin Award
Trainee Skin Award
Trainer Skin Award

The first Salon Skin Award winner is Max Centini, owner of the eco chic hair salon Maximiliano Centini Salon.

The Trainer and Trainee Awards will be launched in January 2012 with the support of the prestigious London College of Beauty Therapy and others.

We’ll be following the award winners throughout the year offering advice on reducing green footprint, developing business and jobs that care equally for profit, planet, product, jobs and services.

Ambassadors

We’ve snapped up two fantastic Ambassadors to support and promote Skin. The London College for Beauty Therapy and award winning Abena Richardson, owner of Asquared Salon.

We’re keeping it under wraps for now but we can tell you that the third Ambassador will be joining Skin soon.

Making an Impact

We want to make a real impact. And there’s a lot happening in the skin project including:

a green hair and beauty guide
pop-up events on eco chic hair and beauty
eco hair and beauty jobs and training
eco chic training workshops for hair and beauty professionals and trainees
